SECURITY CHALLENGES AND STUDENTS SAFETY:A report on the Ago Iwoye robbery incidents

The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday, June 18, 2026, in the Mariam axis of Ago-Iwoye, the host community of Olabisi Onabanjo University.

Suspected armed robbers reportedly invaded a student hostel known as Bukky’s Court. Reports said they forced entry and stole students’ belongings, including phones and other items.

During the disturbance, a final-year student reportedly came out after noticing the commotion and was shot.

News of the killing triggered protests by students, who gathered and marched demanding improved security and justice. Shuttle activities were disrupted during the demonstration.

The university management confirmed the death and declared a lecture-free day while expressing condolences to the student’s family and promising to work with security agencies.

The Ogun State Police Command said it had opened an investigation and launched efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.

There have also been conflicting social media posts circulating about the victim and circumstances. Those claims have not all been independently verified, so it’s safer to rely on confirmed statements from the university and police while investigations continue.

It’s a very sad incident, especially with reports that the student was close to completing school.
